Review: Battle of Yavin collectable coin

Posted by ,

Among the three gifts with purchase that will be offered to buyers of Star Wars sets during the May the Fourth period at the start of next month is a collectable coin.

It depicts a scene from the battle that takes place in the trench of the Death Star at the end of episode 4 from the point of view of a TIE Fighter pilot.

Artemis Space Launch System discovered!

Artemis Space Launch System

Artemis Space Launch System

A hitherto unknown Icons set has been discovered in the wild in the LEGO store at Taipei airport!

The 3,601 piece 10341 Artemis Space Launch System looks to be a spectacular display model, far surpassing previous NASA sets in that regard, in my opinion.

It's not known when it will be officially launched (pun intended), but presumably it will be imminently given its premature appearance on the Asian island.

As for its price, we can only guess at this stage, based on piece count, that it'll be around $299 / £279. Let us know what you're expecting to pay in the comments.

Red Dragon's Tale: A LEGO Adventure

Posted by ,

5008827 Red Dragon's Tale: A LEGO Adventure is a companion book to the recently released 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon's Tale. It was created in conjunction with D&D publisher Wizards of the Coast and is currently available in the Insiders Rewards Centre in exchange for 2,700 points.

Having never played the fantasy game, I can't make head nor tale of it, so I can't review it as such, but I will however make you aware of what's inside.

Review: 75376 Tantive IV

Posted by ,

Of the countless vehicles featured in Star Wars, the Tantive IV definitely belongs in the growing Starship Collection. After all, the famed Rebel Blockade Runner was the first vehicle shown in the original movie and its midi-scale recreation, 75376 Tantive IV, looks excellent.

Similar to other sets from the series, I think the proportions of the model seem accurate and there is plenty of detail included, matching the brilliant 75244 Tantive IV in some areas. Unfortunately, the price of £69.99, $79.99 or €79.99 is a major concern.

Review: 40704 Micro NINJAGO Docks

Posted by ,

It sometimes seems as though 70657 NINJAGO City Docks is the forgotten section of the larger NINJAGO City series, doubtless due partly to its modest size, compared with other sets. Various building heights are essential to any city though, including at microscale!

40704 Micro NINJAGO Docks offers that variety and should be a suitable companion for 40703 Micro NINJAGO City, as both are available from the Insiders Rewards Centre currently.

Review: 75382 TIE Interceptor

Posted by ,

Last year saw the introduction of 75355 X-wing Starfighter, which paid deliberate tribute to one of the two original Ultimate Collector Series sets, 7191 X-wing Fighter. The old-fashioned 7181 TIE Interceptor receives similar treatment this year, updated as 75382 TIE Interceptor.

The original design is remarkably dated, but its modern equivalent looks fantastic in official images, aiming to replicate the TIE Interceptor's spherical cockpit more faithfully than any other TIE-series model. Furthermore, the designer has paid particular attention to detailing, which has definitely proven worthwhile.

Review: 42621 Heartlake City Hospital

Posted by ,

It took a while for Heartlake City to get in the medical business; the first hospital didn't debut in the Friends world until 41318 Heartlake Hospital in 2017. Fortunately, the second generation of Friends didn't have to wait seven years for a hospital (though it has been seven years since the first hospital).

The new cast of Friends are having their medical needs being addressed with 42621 Heartlake City Hospital. I remember the first hospital having many windows and almost as many stickers, but very few minidolls. I hope that the newer hospital has rectified that somewhat.

This set shows a rather momentous occasion - Autumn is receiving a prosthetic arm!

Designer insight: Niek van Slagmaat

Boost Creative Toolbox

Boost Creative Toolbox

Many LEGO set designers use our BrickLists feature to maintain a list of the sets they've worked on and often provide interesting insights about their involvement.

Once a week we publish an entry from one of their lists on the home page to increase awareness of this information and to encourage more designers to create them.

Niek van Slagmaat wrote this about their work on 17101 Boost Creative Toolbox:

My first product! Designed in collaboration with Carl Merriam and the living legend Jørn Thomsen. My good friend Ilia Gotlib, who back then was in our product technology team, engineered the fantastic external motor.

Vernie was created by the 3 of us working together, because the neural load was too much for a single designer. I personally worked on the Guitar and did a number of sketch models for Frankie the cat and the Rover. The complexity of this project was extremely daunting, only just coming into the company, but it was perfect for teaching me a lot of skills in very little time.
