Apart from Living In The Shadow… I can’t see how any of these tracks will work live. Far too dour and maudlin surely? If they play The Buzzing, everyone will go to the bar. Or maybe this is just another way I seem to be the only one who doesn’t get this album.

Marlowe is in no way dour surely? Although not that many people seem too fond of instrumentals (love them myself) - they’ve already played GYDHOMS live although I wasn’t at any of the gigs, and Ecclesiastes isn’t a rocking track but they’ve played Moment Of Clarity live and it’s never gone down badly, not exactly a rocking song (although VERY good), Ghost Trio will be fine, pretty much straight rock track that, as are BYWYAF and Why Turbulence?, Stark Raving Sane is fairly frantic and short - so lots of fun to jump around to. And while I’m not too taken with the middle of Plague Bell it’s got a powerful riff, the more I listen the more that comes across, looking forward to hearing how some of it goes live as I’m fairly sure there’s more than 1 layer of guitar in places (more Steve on 2nd guitar?)

If they played Marlow I’m pretty sure the causal rock fan would assume a mid-life crisis had hit hard, and again just go to the bar. As the upcoming tour is a support slot, I would imagine there will only be 1 or 2 new tracks, and mostly crowd pleasers, and I for one am very much looking forward to be pleased!

And down it went in a couple of hours. I figured out he was a fellow GR countryman, I asked him nicely to respect the band and the fact that this is not released yet and he removed it with no complaints :) Please do the same if you see it around. Cheers!

Finally got home to find my copy on the doormat. Sounds interesting on first listen, i’m personally finding it a better listen than Crooked Timber which although I enjoyed, I rarely revisited. Choice tracks so far are GYDHOMS, BYWYAY and enjoying Ghost Trio and Why Turbulence?. Will have to give it a few more spins but its better than I thought it would be after hearing a few snippets on youtube etc. Still not keen on Stark Raving Sane if i’m honest but they cant all be great

i’ve been listening to the album for the past couple of days… and i must say i’m really impressed. i was a bit cautious before listening to it as i feared it would be too “arty” and sound like crooked timber -which i wasn’t very fond of-, but i was sold immediately after the first listen. i’m loving the different feel each track has and how they all fit within the album, plus the fact that the band tries out new sounds and approaches, one thing for sure is that you never get bored with t?
it’s still too early but i think it’s their strongest effort in many many years… very solid album with no filler tracks for me (except maybe for marlow, which still, isn’t bad at all).

BYWYAY live version is much better… studio version sounds a bit “static” for me (compared to previous live versions).

All I’m saying is, I love Therapy? (honestly I do), and I’ve been banging on about them for the last 18 years to everyone I know (friends and family), to the point of annoyance, and some of these people are coming to the Bristol show to see them for the first time, partly because I insisted, and partly because of Skindred, and I want them to fly the flag of Therapy? live rock brilliance. This, I hope, is with such tracks as Teethgrinder, Innocent X, Evil Elvis, Trigger Inside, Polar Bear, Jude The Obscene, Sister, Stop It You’re Killing Me, Gimme Back My Brain and I Told You I Was Ill, because these tracks rock, and I love them. These tracks, and so many more, rock so hard, and I assume this was the reason why the boys first formed the band in the first place, to rock hard! But if they play The Buzzing or Plague Bell (or, I’m sorry, but nearly all the ABCOL tracks, apart from Living In.. which is great), these people will laugh at my allegiance and never listen to T? again. There is a fine line between selling out and not appealing to new listeners. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think T? should just make songs purely on the basis that they will sell to the lowest common rock denominator, (ie sell out and make Troublegum 2), but I honestly think they have gone to far with this album, life is too short for philosophers, historical writers and obtuse noises. Can’t we just rock the fuck out? Isn’t that the whole point?

Joel you don’t like the album - fine, I didn’t like much of High Anxiety, so just leave this one and see what the next brings. Musicians don’t start by making music to appease their fans and they certainly don’t do that after 20+ years, they make it because that’s what they want to create. This album is where the band feel they are musically, it reflects where they are in their lives and to an extent what they’ve been listening to, not just recently but over the whole of their lives. In the end it’s down to them not us to decide what is T? or not. We can decide to not buy it, listen to it or go to the gigs if that’s what we choose, but we can’t decide what T? should sound like, and nor should we.
And do you really care what other people think of your musical tastes? I understand these are your friends and family and so their opinions matter to you but regarding music? It’s such a subjective thing, each to their own and all that. Do you love the band? (as a whole, not just this album) or do you care more what people will think of you if they don’t?
Personally I think you will get pretty much what you want at the gig, they’re supporting and so it probably will be some of the better known stuff and I hope you and your friends enjoy the gig.

I’m not sure CH, but global have sent me a replacement, the other copy (I ordered 2) is a bit scuffed but they’ll all be like that, it’s the only disappointing thing about the album - the vinyl comes in a hard card inner sleeve, no poly-liner or even paper inner sleeve inside that, so they’ll all be slightly marked. It’s frustrating, I get for some people the vinyl is a novelty, but for me it’s the main way I listen to music and I pay the premium for that, so I’d like it to be better thought through by the label (It’s not just them, lots of labels seem to be doing it, my latest 2 Mono LPs are the same and they’re a really quiet band for long periods of their songs so you can really hear the effect :-(. However I’m emailing global later to ask what they want me to do with the scratched copy and I’m going to mention it to them and suggest using poly-lined or paper inners in future releases, it won’t cost them a lot extra per LP and I’ll happily pay an extra pound for it.

Yeah probably very unlucky, first new record I’ve had that’s been like that in hundreds, likely happened at the pressing plant where someone’s caught it on something, not to worry, got 2 copies ( T? have never repressed so I thought I’d better in case I drop one in a few years, also got another copy of CT for the same reason at the same time).

fair play to GLOBAL then for their response ,i guess the best we can do for now is to put it in a polyliner as soon as its received ,at least it will save extra scuffing ,although like you say its a bit thoughtless of the record label ,i think ill drop a line to “record collector mag” pointing out the problem ,and see if it gets any response

Usually, they dispatch things early so that they arrive on the release date or a couple of days before (like the Crippled Black Phoenix album I got last week which arrived on the release date). And with copies already floating around even in some highstreet stores, I’m really surprised they were unable to do it with this album. Oh well, I hope it at least gets sent on Monday, guess I’ll have to wait a couple more days.

Maybe they’re going to spring A Briefer Crack Of Light on us in six / twelve months time ?

I hope they don’t release another “Gold Edition”. I don’t need to get some of the same tracks twice. Just an EP of leftover stuff would be much better. That’s my opinion anyway. Plus, I hate when bands release special editions *after* the main edition comes out - it’s a blatant rip-off of hardcore fans (I’m not counting special editions that come out 10 or 20 years later though).

Are you hinting for a Troublegum Special Edition? :)

I don’t think the “gold” CT was a blatant rip off really. There’s some different mixes on there for the collectors to have. Some people love all that kind of stuff. They’re not a band that releases singles overly regularly either, so the collectors are probably happy enough to buy things like that when they do come out.

Well, I mean, there is some good stuff on the Gold Edition… but why include a few tracks from the main album release that are exactly the same? That seemed totally pointless to me.

I wasn’t specifically hinting for a Troublegum Special Edition, but I did think to myself that it sounded like I was when I wrote it… and I wouldn’t be against one!

I listened to Nurse last night… great songs, but really poor sound quality… I doubt even a re-master will do them justice… so what I was thinking was that the band should just re-record that album and release Nurse 2012! :-D Maybe do Pleasure Death too as a bonus, as that’s really bad quality too!
