Best / favourite female performers / artists

Started by Thefanthattriedtostrangleitslf

I’ve just realized only 2 (!) of the albums in my collection are albums with a female singer (I do listen to more bands with female singers but most of these albums are in my dad’s collection), so I thought where all the great names could come together :) My favourites are probably not new to anyone, in no particular order:

* Sandra Nasic (Guano Apes) - energy bomb on stage, great versatile voice. I like her rough voice best but she can switch between that and softer vocals really well. Even though the last Guano Apes album scares me she’s definitely up there.
* Sharleen Spiteri (Texas) - I just like everything she does (with Texas)… she makes it look simple, but it isn’t. Able to make pop music with soul.
* Shirley Manson (Garbage) - she’ll kill me if I don’t put her name here! Or was that someone else…? I pretty much just like Garbage as a whole immensely so I felt I couldn’t leave her out.
* Skin (Skunk Anansie) - another energy bomb and most of all great live performer, don’t really feel I should justify this choice any further :p

No idea on the names of the people, but there is/was a group from Manchester in the mid 90s called Bandit Queen who did that fuzzy grungey poppish thing quite nicely. Only man was the drummer.

Patti Smith is quite decent, although I’ve never really listened beyond the Horses album.

Shonen Knife are worth a mention. All-girl Japanese Ramonesy punk stuff. Incredibly intimidating in person too. Adorable, but I had seen the massive moshpit they stirred up.

There’s probably more somewhere…

Kerrang! are currently hyping a band called Halestorm. They are pretty good in a heard-it-all-before-80’s rocktastic kind of way.

I’ll second the PJ Harvey vote.
Life Without Buildings were a great indiepop/alternative band with a really unique vocal style from Sue Tompkins.
Let’s not forget Ari Up of The Slits either.
Kristin Hersh from Throwing Muses/50ft Wave is a fantastic lyricist, vocalist/guitarist and performer.
Her cousin Tanya Donnelly was singer in Belly as well as solo stuff and is also very cool.
The Breeders are always fun.
Sleater-Kinney were a 3-woman guitar band, made some great albums ranging from furious screaming riot grrrl/punk angst to very inventive rock. Great drummer too. Two of them are in Wild Flag now who are also a great rock band.
Tegan and Sara are pop geniuses of the first order.
Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth is worth a mention.
There’s always Siouxie and the Banshees, I’m not a huge fan but they are of passing Therapy? interest cos Martin McCarrick played with them.

Would mention Angela Gossow from Arch Enemy - first time I heard them I didn’t realise it was a woman singing, she has the death metal thing down!

There would be Christina Scabbia from Lacuna Coil.

Probably loads more, but just thought they deserved a mention as woman making it in the Metal scene nowadays (are loads more probably)

Was listening to some Garbage today and reminded how impressive Shirley Manson is in concert. And on record, of course.
I’m not a huge The Gossip fan, but live Beth Ditto is amazing.
Saw Lily Allen at a festival once and was surprisingly impressed.
Nina Persson of The Cardigans has an effortless cool.
PJ Harvey (of course) is amazing.
Seen Belly live a couple of time, so must mention Tanya Donnelly.
Kat Bjelland from Babes in Toyland is a great front woman.
Sinead O’Connor has a bald head. And an amazing voice.
Stevie Nicks, fantastico.
Kim Gordon and Kim Deal. Sonic Youth and Pixies. Nuff said.
She might be everywhere, but Adele has a rare set of lungs on her.

There are also a load of cool punk bands old and new with some/all female singers - Kleenex, Mo-dettes, X-Ray Spex, Delta 5, A.C. Temple, Gramme, Rogers Sisters, Bratmobile…

There’s always Tarrie B., of My Ruin, not my cup of tea though I did see her old band Tura Satana once and they put on a damn fine show. Back in the grim days of nu-metal (urrgh) there was Human Waste Project too who were ok.

And no one’s mentioned Hole yet - Live Through This is still a great album.

No I’m just messing with you. Nobody loves Evanescence.

Skunk Anansie are far and away the greatest female vocalist group ever.

Jennifer Charles is amazing (band called Elysian Fields but has done spots with Mike Patton, Firewater, all the cool kids…)

Phoebe Kreutz “treads a fine balance between doe-eyed innocence and the kind of brittle, finely tuned sense of cynicism only an 80-year-old hooker should possess.”

Also love Black Box Recorder and L7.
