Songs that sound like Therapy?

#

Started by Thefanthattriedtostrangleitslf

It’s already been mentioned a few times on this board the main riff from Sister sounds an awful lot like U2’s Vertigo… And I tend to agree.

Here’s another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJlOhi-moUE This is basically one of Therapy?’s riffs played slower and on an acoustic guitar. Just wondering if other people will hear it before I say the name of the song :p I just realized it when I was rewatching the acoustic ‘Kick Out The Jam’ session, it’s basically exactly the same when you listen to that version… Shocking! (to me, at least)

I’m not judging whether it’s coincidence or not and that’s not *really* what this thread should be about, I just thought having this kind of thread would be interesting. Pretty sure we had one at some point but I couldn’t find it back.

Share your thoughts and personal suspicions you might have >:-)

I’ve always thought the intro to this, from when the guitar starts up until the singing starts sounds like the beginning of Enjoy The Struggle (there’s a live version that sounds much more like it but I can’t find it anywhere).

Oh and that song was recorded in 2004…5 years before CT! Works both ways mate, T? have always acknowledged they’ve borrowed from loads of music, old trance, dubstep, other guitar bands - I mean go and reread the The Stories Behind The Songs On Crooked Timber, Andy talks about techno, dubstep, Charles Mingus, My Bloody Valentine, Big Black, old rave tunes and Jesus Lizard amongst others.
Plus the fact that the opening for I Told You I Was Ill is blatantly lifted straight from one of Mumra’s scenes in Thundercats ;-) (this is a joke for anyone who hasn’t seen Thundercats)

I always thought Enjoy The Struggle sounded like “Walk” by Pantera. I think Andy admits as much himself in those stories behind the songs. On the flipside, Lostprophets first single back in 2001 sounded like Punishment Kiss:

Ok, since no one has guessed yet, the Absynthe Minded song = a calm version of Rock You Monkeys. If you don’t hear it, look up the Kick Out The Jams sessions :p

Yesterday when I was listening to Rage’s album ‘Strings To A Web’ my dad said at one point ‘hey, this sounds like Therapy?’ (about the song ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’). He didn’t mean a certain riff, just the overall sound / style of that song at least, ‘cos on the whole Rage and Therapy? are quite far apart in terms of style ;) I admit it’s slightly reminiscent of High Anxiety-era Therapy?

The verses of Free Drug Zone from Seaweed sounds very influenced by Nausea, except the chord progression ends on the third chord and the bass line isn’t as prominent as Nausea,

Wasn’t there a thread like this before? I seem to remember saying that ‘Yes Its Fucking Political outro/solo section’ sounded like the Knives riff only to have Squall start at me and go on about how I wasn’t allowed to compare them because they use E and F chords or something! Ho ho!

Didn’t Therapy? admit to taking that drum beat off some dance record or something? Pretty sure I read a quote to that affect.

Lol, it’s possible, but I don’t know for sure. It just sounds so distinctively Fyfe that I just assumed he came up with it. Of course, he could have built his drum style around that, so I’m not denying anything. If it’s true that would be a great case of Therapy?ception, lol =)

It’s generally thought Fyfes’ drumming on the early T? records was influenced by what was described as ‘New Beat’ (The Belgian / German / Dutch version from the late 80s, not the USA term from the earlier in the decade), which was basically the dance music sound of the time in those countries.

I think Andy said in an interview that meat abstract was written after he played a track by new beat act Erotic Dissidents to Fyfe. The beat is pretty straight on Dissidents song but reckon the general pace of the track started them off on the vibe for meat abstract.

I think subconsciously I started to like good house/techno through listening to t?

The chorus to “Bad Karma Follows You Around” is almost identical to Judas Priest’s “Hell Bent for Leather”. A bit curious - given the huge Priest fan Mr. McKeegan is, he must have noticed. Why didn’t they just cover “Hell Bent for Leather”?

If you mean the start, yes, it totally is! Same rhythm and everything. Wow, what a bad band though. Go back to 1983!

Lol, I saw this band at a Wolf concert while they were touring with Mats Léven, who is actually (far) better than their actual singer. Gave them a bit of a boost, I suppose. In the ‘Greek metal department’ I much prefer Wolfcry who are much superior, but much less well-known…
